How We Teach

  1. Two teachers work cooperatively with up to fifteen students per grade. A Student Assistant and Volunteers further enrich the staff/child ratio at each grade level.
  2. Teachers design creative lessons around the interests and abilities of the children. following grade-level themes. Cooperative learning is commonplace, emphasizing hands-on, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary methods. While there is no set curriculum, the academic portion of each day includes lessons in reading, math, science, and social studies.
  3. Classroom culture embodies Horizons commitment to the development of the whole child by providing experiences that enhance confidence, foster awareness of community, build problem-solving skills, and encourage joy in learning.
  4. Local field trips, classroom visitors, community meals, and assemblies presented by each grade enrich the environment and enhance children's learning.
  5. Swimming instruction is offered daily for each grade; tennis instruction is offered for grades 6-8.
