Horizons at Harley Student Enrichment Program

2011 / Program Overview

History:

  • Over 1200 tuition scholarships have been provided
  • The program's 17th summer
  • First 4 year college graduate from our pool of alumni
  • The average participant spends 5 years in the Horizons Program 

Primary Criteria:

  • Income Eligibility – Qualify for free or reduced lunch
  • Residency Eligibility – Must live in the City of Rochester

Key Program Standards:

  • Maximum 15 students per class
  • 2 certified teachers and a Classroom Assistant in each class
  • Every student is taught how to swim

2011 Particulars:

  • 132 students grade K through 8th
  • 20 new to Horizons and 112 returning students
  • 50 schools are represented
  • 97 from RCSD and from a myriad of Charter, Private, Parochial, and suburban schools.
  • 18 certified teachers and 9 classroom assistants
  • Graduated 12 “Rising 9th Graders” Full-time Health and Physical Education Teacher
  • Librarian and a Reading Specialist
  • Social Worker / Mental Health Counselor
  • Art, Drama and Music Teachers
  • Swimming. Gardening, Tennis, Zumba, Yoga, Soccer, Lacrosse, and Field Trips
  • Over 11,000 meals served
  • Approximately 60 student volunteers
  • Field Day and garden closing ceremonies
  • Garden Project for 3rd and 4th graders 
  • 15 Field trips completed
  • Annual “Reading Day” and two (2) official “Program Visit” days.
  • Over 800 books given to program participants 
  • Literacy Clinic with SUNY Geneseo serving the 41 neediest students through individual tutoring - 4 days a week.
  • 5 Roberts Wesleyan College OPE student teachers
  • 1 Princeton Club Intern and 1 Rochester Works / Digital Skills for Youth Intern 
  • Plus an additional 12 students – Grades K - as part of a new Horizons at MCC pilot launch we incubated for this summer. Summer 2012 they will transition to the MCC campus.
