The Program

The Horizons morning program focuses on academic pursuits through a problem-solving, interdisciplinary approach. Afternoons include swimming, tennis, art, music, heath, cooking and outdoor education as well as academics.

Learning is theme based and integrated to include literacy, writing, math, science and social studies activities that require problem-solving through a team approach. Teachers are encouraged to be creative to make learning fun. There is no set curriculum and classroom work is guided by the grade level themes and the interests and strengths of both the teachers and students.

The student to staff ratio is 5:1. There are two highly trained and experienced teachers per class, who teach in city, suburban or the Harley schools. They are assisted by paid students and volunteers.

Attendance is extremely important because the program is only 6 weeks long, and there are many more applicants than there are seats.

Students are transported by bus to and from, but parents/guardians must provide transportation between home and the bus pickup/dropoff location. Breakfast and lunch are provided daily.

The cost to families is $25 for the first child and $10 for each sibling.

Contributions from The Harley School and very generous individuals, corporations and foundations cover most of the annual costs. Horizons is a United Way Donor Choice Program, #2316.
